About Shree

For those who think vegetarian food can’t be fulfilling, and for those who stereotype all Indian food as fiery and greasy, Shree will convert the biggest skeptics.

This gem, situated in an Indian shopping plaza in Westmont, opened in 1982 and is the oldest and the only South Indian vegetarian restaurant in the western suburbs. It was founded by the suri brothers, who now own a Mexican restaurant in Indian. Gagan Suri, manages this restaurant today. He is credited with enhancing Shree’s image by emphasizing quality and hospitable service. Indeed the service was knowledgeable and several cuts above most restaurants in this suburban area. India is so vast with about 8½ million people who speak 14 official languages and many dialects and practice different religions, that it’s not surprising that the subcontinent’s cuisines are diverse too. The main gastronomical regions are those of the geographic directions; that of the south tends to be vegetarian, since many inhabitants are Hindus, and follow a strict diet with a foundation of rice, lentils, produce and dairy, such as yogurt, cheese and buttermilk. Most ingredients are stirfried and steamed, so there is little oil used in the cooking, making it healthful. With today’s health and fitness consciousness, this is an added attraction.
